A short history of the OSK focusing on international activities is as follows
| Oct. 20, 1989 | the Society was first inaugurated. Inaugurating president was Prof. Sangsoo Lee at KAIST. |

| Feb. 1, 1990 | the first general meeting held at Seoul National University. |
| Feb. 2, 1990 | the Optical Society of Korea was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology |
| Mar. 31, 1990 | the inaugurating issue of the Korean Journal of Optics and Photonics (Korean) was published. |
| Aug. 1, 1991 | the OSK joined the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies. |
| Feb. 11, 1992 | six technical divisions were first organized. (Optical technology, Optical science, Quantum technology, Optical information processing, Quantum electronics, Vision and medical optics) |
| Jun. 16, 1992 | MOU with the Optical Society of CIS (previously USSR) was signed. |
| Sep. 16, 1993 | an ISSN was assigned to the Korean Journal of Optics and Photonics. |
| Jan. 13, 1997 | MOU with the Optical Society of America (OSA) was signed. |
| Jan. 31, 1997 | the inaugurating issue of the Optics and Technology (Korean) was published. |
| Mar. 31, 1997 | the inaugurating issue of the Journal of the Optical Society of Korea (JOSK, English) was published. |
| Dec. 24, 1997 | MOU with the SPIE was signed. |
| Mar. 27, 1998 | Society homepage was first established. |
| Jun. 12, 1998 | the JOSK was listed in INSPEC. |
| Jan. 1, 2001 | MOU with the Laser Society of Japan (LSJ) was signed. |
| Sep. 1, 2004 | MOU with the Chinese Optical Society (COS) was signed. |
| August, 2005 | MOU with CLEO/PR was signed |
| Jan. 1, 2006 | MOU with the Optical Society of Japan (OSJ) was signed. |
| Oct. 20-21, 2009 | the OSK held a special conference celebrating its 20th anniversary in Gwangju. |
| May, 2014 | nine technical divisions were organized. (Optical technology, Photonics, Optical science, Digital Holography and Information Optics, Biophotonics, Quantum electronics, Quantum Optics and Information, Lithography) |
| Jan. 1, 2015 | MOU with the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) and with the Chinese Society of Optical Engineering (CSOE). |
| Feb. 1, 2015 | MOU with the European Optical Society (EOS) |
| Jan. 19-20, 2015 | the OSK participated in the ceremony commemorating the International Year of Light (IYL) as the national node for Korea. |
| Jul. 13-15, 2015 | the OSK hosts a summer meeting commemorating the 25th year of the OSK and the IYL in Gyeongju. |
| Jan. 1, 2017 | The title of the English Journal is changed from the JOSK to the Current Optics and Photonics (COPP). |
